The mere mention of Saint-Émilion conjures up images of deep purple robes, vaulted cellars, and exceptional bottles for wine lovers. But what makes this vineyard so internationally prestigious? The answer lies in two words that guide the daily work of our winemakers: Terroir and Merlot. Understanding these elements will radically transform your wine tasting experience during your visits to the neighboring Châteaux.
The Saint-Émilion vineyard benefits from a rare geological complexity. Four main types of soil are generally distinguished, each giving the wines radically different profiles. The limestone plateau surrounding the village brings freshness, tension, and a pronounced minerality to the wine. The clay-limestone slopes offer power, structure, and remarkable tannic richness. Finally, the gravel and sandy areas at the foot of the slopes produce wines that are more supple, rounded, and approachable even in their youth. It is this mosaic of soils that makes the appellation so rich.
At the heart of this terroir, Merlot reigns supreme, occupying over 80% of the vineyard area. Ideally complemented by Cabernet Franc (which adds structure and spicy notes), Merlot gives Saint-Émilion wines their silky texture, opulent palate, and complex aromatic profile focused on black fruit, plum, cocoa, and, after a few years of aging, truffle and leather.
Another local characteristic worth noting is its Grand Cru Classification. Unlike the historic 1855 classification of the Médoc, which is immutable, the Saint-Émilion classification is revised every ten years. Created in 1955, it encourages estates (Château Premier Grand Cru Classé A, B, or Grand Cru Classé) to maintain impeccable quality and constantly innovate, thus guaranteeing consumers the excellence of their chosen wine. During your stay at Hôtes de Saint-Émilion II, we will be happy to guide you towards family-run and private properties where the welcome is as generous as the wine.
